My friend has a mesial bite and it looks like the first example, but when he puts his lower jaw in a healthy position, it looks like the second example from the photo. It might be easy to tell the difference for an experienced person, but I'm just starting to use this site. Are there any other ways to identify maxilla's recession?

I just realized that he has a maxilla recession after all. He has trouble breathing through his nose and a mesial bite, which, although indirect, are signs of a maxilla recession.
