Is it autism or something?

I've been playing chess to pass the time and I get the allure but really you gotta memorize a bunch of shit just to get started and that's really off-putting.

Did you guys start doing this as kids or something how tf do you niggas have the time to do that?

I just uninstalled because it's people spamming the same bs every game and yes while it would take me literally 10 seconds to memorize how to respond to some cheese bullshit I just can't bring myself to do that because why should I have to open a textbook and study just to play the game?

Genuinely don't understand how people get so deep into this.

I have this weird aversion to that guy not sure why it probably has nothing to do with him because he seems nice enough

I like watching chess be played and listening to explanations of games but I just don't want to have to devote significant amounts of time just to start having fun

That's why I wonder what compels someone to do that?

Did you start young? Did you just not have much better to do? If not either, what about it is so rewarding to you?

Also maybe I am just preemptively preventing myself from committing because is see how easily it can escalate.

This doesn't seem like a game that you can dabble in. You start to get punished for lack of knowledge very quickly.

you don't need to memeorise anything until you get pretty high up the ladder

just spam normal boring moves to get past the early game and from the midgame it's not about memorisation it's about wits :bigbrain:

It's always people with a certain level of autism who are super interested in some niche thing (and will always try to master their craft) that 99% of the planet's population don't know or give a shit about..

I see this all the time in e-sports, poker, etc., or less traditional sports, like you can see quite easily that all people involved in such activities are constantly trying / strugle to fake / bypass as beeing normies..

Meanwhile, true normies are out in nature or around town doing the most normies thing possible..

it seems a lot of people I'm playing against have memorized stuff

Maybe I should just play shorter time

I agree with you on this tbh. I’m not big on some of his qualities but I really enjoy his analysis on his games. I’ve tried watching other chess YouTubers but they don’t go as in depth, nor do they have the energy

You don’t even have to devote a ridiculous amount of time to fully enjoy it. I’m stuck in the 1000-1100 rating range for rapid but I still have fun, although it’s a love hate relationship which is normal for a game like chess

My favourite aspects of chess are learning openings and doing game review after matches to see where I fucked up, what I could’ve have done :feelsez:

I started out of pure boredom but I grew to love it. It was definitely chess content that got me hooked.

Definitely check out Agadmator on YouTube, he does analysis on games from all time periods, and his content is way different to Gotham:feelsez:

Well chess is interesting but like I said in a previous comment

It just seems like in the beginning knowledge checking people is very easy

And this isn't like a very difficult thing to overcome tbh but compared to other games that are more dynamic it makes it a bit less entertaining if you don't want to commit to learning

I can easily see how if I started to study things I would dominate a lot of the people I'm playing against, they tend to be very aggressive with memorized stuff in the opening but often make less intelligent decisions towards middle and end game

Yeah I'm not saying it requires some massive commitment but I was surprised to see how knowledge dependent it can be early on. I wasn't expecting every other person I play against to have some predetermined course of action. A bit naive I know but I'm not really in the mood to be doing a lot of thinking, I started playing because every other mobile game is full of microtransactions.

I kinda just want to play against people like me who aren't spamming shit or trying to cheese a checkmate with some shit they saw on YouTube. I can do that too obviously but I don't really want to :feelscry:

I might end up having to do that though because like I said there's not many other good options for competitive games to play on the phone

Literally the only checkmate trick you need to watch out for at your level is called the Scholar’s mate, but it’s sooo easily stopped. Once you know the refutation against it, you’re golden because sub 1200 players play it often.

And I know you don’t want to watch content but learning an opening is super useful. There’s 10 minute intro courses to certain openings on YT.

White: Vienna Gambit
Black: Caro Kann

these openings are super beginner friendly, especially the Vienna. You’ll win most of the time with it:feelsez:

I think it's a genuinely fun game but it seems you have to do quite a lot of upfront investment which is why I'm confused on how people get into it.

I knew this kid in middle school who went to chess club and stuff and that makes sense to me. I think as a kid learning to be good at chess can be genuinely good for your development because it obviously teaches many important life lessons.

After a kid though it seems there's easier ways to have fun that don't require so much obsession.

It’s fun irl if with friends or dad
Because none of them really know shit, and it’s all logic, not 10 hours of learning random tactics

Otherwise it’s stupid

you will find it more captivating as you play more and more, especially when you move up ELO and beat people with ease

fair enough, a lot of new players do tend to spam the scholars mate due to how easy it is for new players to fall into that trap, especially since their moves are extremely shallow

When I used to skate it was the thrill of speed and showing off and general risk that kept me interested

Really any competitive game teaches life lessons but I think because chess is so structured the lessons get compressed because there isn't much freedom to excuse mistakes

The lessons are things like accepting your own mistakes, taking accountability, persistence after loss or disadvantage both in each individual game and consecutive games, thinking ahead and predicting outcomes, making decisions under pressure and obviously diligence and discipline because as I'm realizing hence the post is that you kind of have to formally study to get better

That’s a good question to be honest, I don’t really have a specific answer for this. I started playing at around 3 years old and I’ve been playing ever since, not daily but from time to time I’ll play some games online. The other thing is just being able to see how many new things your brain can learn/understand, and also the ability to ‘read’ your opponents moves. I’ll draw a diagram later to further elaborate on this.

I enjoyed chess for a while, started over the board and learned a lot and then moved to online. It was pretty fun in the beginning and then it started getting a bit boring when I realised at some point you can't really play it for fun as a competitive person. Stopped playing when I got to like 1k elo, which isn't that high but not low either. Nowadays I just play whenever someone invites me but I forgot all strategy, just enjoying a bit of pattern recognition.

Early start seems like the best thing for chess really. Kinda jealous tbh. Did your parents want you to play chess or was it just around?

The best tricks I've ever landed were kick flips into handrails I could have probably pushed even further but my health cucked me hard and I had to stop skating :feelscry:

Yeah I imagine it consumes you and you either take it completely seriously or don't engage with it at all

I've had to stop some hobbies because I'm like that. I just know I can't even play because I start taking L's too seriously

I’m sorry to hear that man, I really hope your able to push past your health issues and do whatever you want to ❤️

Under 1400 it’s all about board vision and seeing attacks on your opponents king, more pattern recognition than rote memoization.

If you play normal and sane moves you’re either going to wait for your opponent to fuck up (highly likely) and pounce on them with a tactic you intuitively see or if they’re also playing conservatively you have to beat them in an end game.

Only at 1500+ does memorizing opening lines 5-10 moves deep start to become important. Even then, what separates shitters at this level from GMs is still instinctive pattern recognition.

Appreciate that

How much did you skate?

Yeah he did make a thread about it, by the way if you don’t mind me asking, what is your ELO on chess.com?
384 rapid and highest 442

Why do you ask?

I've been dabbling in bullet but 3 minute is where I feel most comfortable right now until I learn some tactics
Learning tactics can be tough but eventually everyone gets the hang of it but just remember to be consistent in practicing
