How do people (normies) know their height if it's not officially measured?

Not counting PSL spergs as people.
I was measured at 19. year old in the military but many countries don't have compulsory military training, so how do people, average masses of people know their height in the first place without being measured by a medical professional?
Also PSL spergs are probably not measuring themselves right (it's not easy to do this by yourself) and you get even them overestimating their height.

pretty easy to tell, plus measuring yourself next to friends whos height yk works

Sometimes they’ll measure you at a doctors appointment, definitely while growing up and I was measured at one in my 20s.

Maybe certain sports (basketball, track and field?) need to know it as well.

Why would they measure you at doctors appointment?
To accomplish what exactly, why would doctor need your height?
Especially after you are grown up 20+.

For me it was only once in my 20s. But I imagine the main reason would be to get your body mass index, if you’re overweight or underweight they wanna see by exactly how much.
