Having brutal training regimens and gpod oneliners to opposing army means Spartans are badass. It was a backwater that gave some trouble to Macedonia for some time but then people stopped giving a shit because their society was unsustainable and imploded from within

A Simple example is look at their economic decline. They were losing some of the battles they were constantly waging (happens if you fight all year). This slowed down their economy. They were also keeping Helots as slaves. When their economy slowed down due to all the losses and population decline the Helot revolts got harder to control and they imploded. The population declined because they had very strict citizenship requirements. The battle of Leuctra just revealed of this in plain sight. The Thebans humiliated the Spartans brutally. But you wont see a movie about that is famous because brainless Hollywood
