how do you cope with the fact that almost everything you desire today is just a replacement for something you desired before but couldn't get?

that first girl you liked and didn't get, or that first "i'm gonna be a professional xyz" or whatever you had as a kid, the things you chase today and will probably achieve are just replacements.

the same goes for your future/current partner, you think you were their first choice in life? they almost certainly went thru the same thing, you did not suddenly open their eyes for romance with your bodymaxxed mmtn or whatever looks

“that first girl you liked and didn't get”

you never moved on? almost everyone does.

"i'm gonna be a professional xyz"
no way not getting to be an astronaut (or policeman or fireman) still affects you

I think most of the time it's just that you reevaluate what your goals should be. My dream was to be a firefighter when I was young, and I gave up on that dream because I wanted to be programmer, not because it was too difficult or something.

coping is more painful that accepting it to be honest, using it as a fuel to work more with yourself kinda works

when you look at your life and realize that you're only taking what you can get instead of what you would ideally want, (granted you don't lower your "wants" just for the sake of not disappointing yourself) it doesn't make you feel a bit dead inside?

where do you live? i feel like this mentality is more common in places with low opportunity, like india.

in the US, for my career, theres so many jobs I would be completely fine doing

just relax bro, calm down.
Baby steps is all it takes, that's all that matters.
You're not losing anything if you fail, just try harder next time.
Or maybe i'm too far gone?
Anyways it'll be fine, don't think about it too much and just do whatever youc an

well if your dreams as a kid were "i wanna work a 9-5" then idk what to tell you

i know that and still work hard towards my current goals, it's just that the current goals (which being honest are somewhat impressive compared to the average, even above average person) are reminding me daily that i'm not one of the few extremely talented ones who get to be on the absolute top

What is your point? I fail to see how this relates to the topic you brought up
you can't even relate cuz your dream was something almost anyone can do with like a little bit of work, and the dream didn't die out because it's too difficult but because you changed your mind like any kid does. i'm talking about goals you grinded towards as a teenager, not "i wanna be a dinosaur" type 6yo goals

You can still be great at it bro

That was just meant to be an example. I'm just trying to say that my cope is just realizing that usually it's not a problem that you won't achieve all your dreams because your dreams change anyways as you go through life. I remember how I wanted so badly to be a chess master in my teens, and before I could achieve it I was thinking about something else.

You won't be crying when you're 18 and not a dinosaur cause by then you'll have found that something else is more pertinent. At 20 you won't be sad anymore over that oneitis in high school you didn't get to be with cause by then you'll have found a new girl who is the apple of your eye. In my experience people seldom have these stubborn hyperbolic dreams that they won't compromise as much as an inch on like an anime protagonist.

You can only cope if you're mentally retarded, like turning toward religion and meaningless coping inducing beliefs. If you're a normal person you'll realise pretty quickly there is nothing you can do but acknowledge the point you just made.
