Yes that is your issue you need to start talking to randoms when it's appropriate and just let the conversation go wherever it does. Easiest way to get comfortable with talking to people is to ask them a lot of questions that way they carry 99% of the social interaction and you just nod your head and say "wow, nice" to validate their interaction.
