Any of you polyglots have tips? Ideally I want to learn on my own, without having to actually talk to a person. Also, I want to be able to speak with decent fluency within a year or two.

he knows english, german, russian, spanish, a bit of japanese and korean
and he learned them online by himself

Use mnemonics to learn 200 new words every day
Study grammar for 30min a day
Consume media in the language, looking up translations as needed
Then it will fall into place

Buy the duo lingo app. its free. use it for one year.

Use logical reasoning. I was able to read French and Spanish after learning intermediate Portuguese.

Just move to the country you want to learn its language. When you get there obviously don't spend your time inside - you need to work with others, go out, make friends, talk to the people, etc...
Women can do this very easily since they get tons of attention and support, for men it's a little more difficult.
