But society has normalized the latter, so people reduce each other to their looks

The more mature option between the two is actually the money, given it gives financial security - longterm thinking. This is why how rich you were used to matter a lot for millennia, up to recent history, where everybody is being plagued into being purely vain when it comes to starting a relationship
