How does sunscreen and tanning work together?

I want to get tan for the summer because it would help me ascend and make me look better, but I don't want to look like a sub5 wrinkled retard at the subtle age of 26, so I will likely wear sunscreen. I have seen people claim sunscreen sucks for tanning and also that it doesn't do anything.

How does it work? Does sunscreen stop me from tanning? If so, how else can I get a natural tan? (Don't want to unnaturally tan because I don't like the idea of reapplying it over and over and just want a normal tan)
