About two weeks ago I decided to be extremely reckless when I was at the beach and stared straight at the sun.
Not during sunrise or not sunset but during early afternoon, but at the brightest part of the day:
Istockphoto 947314334 612x612

Clear blue sky, no clouds, no mercy

I’d done sungazing before, but always at sunrise or sunset. This time I figured I could handle peak sunlight.
I couldn't
After staring at the sun for too long, I ended up with a green, blurry spot right in the center of my vision
Somewhat similar to this, but green instead of black:

Image fullsize250140

I brushed it off at first since I had experienced green spots like this one before that eventually went away but this time, it persisted.
I tried reading a book and noticed it wasn’t going away. Up close I could manage to read the pages just fine, but anything at a distance became kind of fucked :feelshaha:
Nature around me was still sharp, but any written signs at a distance were not.
It was then that I realised I probably did fuck something up :feelsgiga:

I looked up the symptoms and came to this:
Solar retinopathy (also known as eclipse retinopathy) refers to photochemical injury to the macular tissue (central retina). It is commonly associated with sungazing or eclipse viewing. A short duration of exposure, as little as a few seconds of fixation on the sun, can cause solar retinopathy
The irony of it all is that I’ve always had perfect vision, being the only person in my family to have this privilege.
Everyone else has to wear glasses/contacts, except for me.
So I might’ve gambled away that genetic privilege out of pure recklessness :feelskek:
The good news is that it has improved since because I had good protocols in place for eye protection and nutrition to speed up the recovery afterwards. There is still a small green/blurry blip in the centre of my vision but it's a lot smaller now and I hardly even notice it anymore since the brain adapts very quickly to these things :bigbrain:

Still, no panic and honestly 0 regret either. This is what recklessness looks like but that's life.
I’d rather fuck around and pay the price than waste away playing it safe.
Best case, I get half my clarity back. Worst case, I adapt and keep going. Either way, I’m not bitching about it because life goes on and I can laugh about it too.

I unironically still advocate for sungazing because I think it can be great.
But if you are going to do it, don’t be reckless like I was and instead, do it at sunrise and/or sunset when the sun isn’t going to fry your retinas :feelsyay:

I sungazed once like a year or 2 ago as well at peak hours but kept blinking and closing my eyes randomly

I then gained the ability to drift my left eye whenever I daydream or look at screens

It’s fixed now after a few months and I can no longer do it

And what was the benefit from it?

You didn't "risk" anything cause there was nothing to gain, I don't understand what your point was

I've done it a lot at sunrise and always liked the feeling it gave me, especially as a way to start the day.

Well it always felt good and natural for me to do it at sunrise/sunset so that's why I did it in the first place.

now ur blind
Nah, my vision is still pretty good jfl. Not perfect anymore like it used to be, sure, but I'm fine with it being just average now.

If it hurts you or doesn't feel natural don't do it. Eyes getting lighter from looking at the sun is a meme. I don't remember what were the other typically listed benefits but it was all a bunch of non sense in general.

I mean surely it didn't feel good at full brightness. Whenever I even attempted it, I would naturally and automatically avert my gazes before looking directly at it. You probably pushed yourself cause you listened to internet charlartans, not because it felt natural.

Admittadly the reaction is a bit extreme, I wouldn't have expected that, but its true that its useless to dwell on it too much, what happened happened. Maybe the lesson here is don't believe anything schizos on the internet says, even if they proofed correct on other topics.

It actually didn't hurt at all in the moment, or afterwards, wasn't even uncomfortable. I would close one eye and then stare into the sun with the open one for a bit and I switched them around like that for a short while.

It will make your eyes darker.

Only makes it lighter if you look through a glass.

I dont remember their names but there were 2 type of sun rays, one makes it lighter and the other makes it darker and the one that makes it darker is too weak to get through a glass, so looking through the glass will make it lighter

Again, will go from t40 to t30 maybe at best, c40 to c30 etc.

Yeah, I will never go back to having perfect vision again.
There is somewhat of a permanent blur now, but it's small in size and only noticeable when I hyperfocus on it, so it doesn't bother me in day-to-day life, luckily.
