I went to high school when only facebook just became a thing

Before it was possible for any mtb to contact rappers and athletes with just a couple taps on a screen

Before Tinder was a thing and any LTB and up could be chads sextoys for a night

Before the world was as feminist and gynocentric as it is today

And even back then i didn't get anything

I hate to say it but you are correct. The world is totally different from when I was a kid and the great shift was smartphones and mobile apps.
