That is a contradiction. In the US porn is legal because it is protected speech under the first Amendment to the constitution. I am not sure why prostitution is not afforded the same free speech protections. But I suspect the difference derives from an enforcement disparity. Porn can be made and distributed nationally/globally, and thus can not be easily curbed, Prostitution is strictly local and can be enforced at the local level. In fact there is no federal law against Prostitution in the US, all the laws regarding prostitution are at the State level.

I think it might have something to do with the fact that professional porn is about acting thus making it "artistic freedom" while prostitution is "real" which makes it more of an immoral act that might impact society on a deeper level. I looked it up and this was mentioned. Still nonsensical to me, jfl at thinking there's a difference between being paid to fuck a random stranger and doing essentially the same thing except while following a script written by producers.
