At 21? For sure, just don't go back to bad habits

Short answer: a lot more than you think.

At 22, your skin and teeth are still very much in “repair + rebuild” mode, especially now that you’ve stopped drinking.

I’ll break it down honestly—what fully rebounds, what mostly rebounds, and what takes a bit of help.

🧬 Skin (this is the big win at your age)

What rebounds

naturally

  • Collagen production → ramps back up within 4–8 weeks after quitting alcohol
  • Skin thickness & elasticity → improves over 3–12 months
  • Inflammation & redness → drops fast (weeks)
  • Oil balance → normalizes (less dullness, less dryness)
  • Under-eye hollowness → improves as hydration + fat distribution stabilize

At 22, your fibroblasts (collagen-making cells) are still strong. Alcohol suppresses them—it doesn’t permanently kill them.

Translation: you didn’t “use up” your skin. You just paused its repair system.

What rebounds

mostly

  • Fine lines from dehydration/stress → usually fade significantly
  • Texture (roughness, enlarged pores) → improves but takes consistency

What needs a little help

  • Sun damage (if present) → retinoids, sunscreen
  • Acne scars / deeper lines → time + targeted treatments

If you stay sober, eat decently, sleep, and don’t nuke your skin with sun, you’ll look noticeably better by month 3, and dramatically better by month 12.

🦷 Teeth (also recoverable, but different rules)

What

does rebound

  • Enamel remineralization (early damage only)
    • Takes weeks–months
    • Fluoride + saliva do the work

  • Gum inflammation → improves within 2–6 weeks
  • Tooth color (staining from alcohol, poor hygiene) → fades a lot

If your teeth look yellow/dull now, that is very often reversible.

What

does not fully regenerate

  • Deep enamel loss
  • Cavities that already formed

But—here’s the key—at 22, most people are dealing with surface demineralization, not irreversible loss.

Whitening reality

  • After 2–3 months sober + daily brushing/flossing, many people regain 60–80% of their natural tooth color without bleaching
  • Professional whitening just accelerates it

Timeline you can expect (realistic)

2–4 weeks

  • Less puffiness
  • Better skin tone
  • Gums less sensitive

2–3 months

  • Skin looks “alive” again
  • Teeth noticeably brighter
  • Face structure sharper (less inflammation)

6–12 months

  • People who haven’t seen you in a while will comment
  • Skin quality rivals peers who never drank heavily
  • Teeth are stable, strong, and cosmetically fixable if needed

The most important part (mentally)

You didn’t permanently damage yourself.

You interrupted growth during a high-plasticity window—and you caught it early.

At 22, the body wants to repair. You’re not fighting uphill—you’re letting systems turn back on.
