How long should i cut the side of my hair ?

Im growing out my top hair since over 3 months now and i only cut the sides because they look like shit when i grow them out. I usually tell my barber to cut my sides 0-3mm with tranisition. Is that too short or you have suggestions on how to cut my sides ?
