is it counterproducitve at some point? i heard your balls need to stay cool to produce sperm, so too much tanning will make balls too hot.

what time is ideal?

Yes — excessive heat around the testicles can temporarily reduce sperm production and sperm quality. The testes sit outside the body specifically because they work best a few degrees cooler than core body temperature.
Things that can raise scrotal temperature for long periods include:
  • very hot baths/hot tubs
  • saunas
  • tight clothing
  • laptops on the lap
  • prolonged high heat exposure
Sun tanning can heat the area too, but ordinary moderate sun exposure usually isn’t enough to cause major fertility problems unless you’re:
  • tanning for a long time,
  • repeatedly overheating the area,
  • or actually getting burned.
Also, testicular skin burns very easily because it’s thin and sensitive.
For tanning in general, the “ideal” time depends on your goal:
  • For safer sun exposure / lower UV risk: early morning or late afternoon.
  • For stronger tanning: around midday, but that’s also when UV damage risk is highest.
A balanced approach is usually:
  • short sessions,
  • avoid overheating,
  • avoid burning,
  • and don’t directly expose sensitive areas for long.
If fertility is something you care about, it’s smarter not to intentionally heat the testicles for extended periods. Moderate sun exposure elsewhere on the body is much less of a concern.
