They aren't as important in the west. In asia women find average men plenty attractive enough. The difference is that attractive women expect a lot from their boyfriends regardless of how handsome they are. An attractive woman will expect lots of gifts and if she doesn't get them she will compare you to her ex bfs which is extremely annoying. This is mainly because it looks bad if she is dating an unnatractive guy and he isn't doing anything for her. If you chose a woman who is less attractive or older and you are more attractive and younger she will care less about these things and only expect loyalty.

Also the types of looks that are valued are different. In the west it is about standing out whereas in asia it is about blending in. This makes it a lot easier for guys to look good there.
