How often do you have intrusive thoughts?

Intrusive thoughts are unwanted thoughts that occur suddenly, many of death-related and violent nature that are related to adrenaline and emotional climax.

An example would be:

-Having dinner with someone and plunging a knife into their throat.

-Having a baby in your arms and throwing it off the balcony of the building and watching it die.

-Be talking to a person and start punching them in the face.


(These are examples that have happened to me). Obviously you won't do it, that's why it's an intrusive, unwanted thought.

I have these thoughts often as if they turn into anxiety OCD, I saw ways that I could inhibit the intrusive thoughts and I saw that they occur because of a neurotransmitter (gamma aminobutyric acid) a chemical within the brain that allows messages to pass between nerve cells. The concentrations of gamma aminobutyric acid within the hippocampus, a key area of the brain involved in memory, if sufficiently influenced, generate the ability to block the retrieval process and prevent the return of thoughts.

I have those all the time. Keep thinking of going in front of a car when riding bike. When driving car, think of crashing and dying. Knives make me feel like taking them and stabbing someone in the back and watching them scream in horror. I think of jumping off ledges. It's scary, I feel you bro.

Those kinds of thoughts only intrude the more you try to wane them. Unless you feel obliged to act on them, pay them no mind.

There’s two Buddhist doctrines for waning off unwanted mental oscillations. If trying to inhibit them only makes it worse, then try to accept them as working of your subconscious mind and act as witness to them till they pass :Comfy:

Do you do anything to avoid them? I think in my case it's anxiety OCD, but it can happen because of prolonged depressive episodes, schizophrenic episodes, ADHD, BDD or other shit, although I don't think it's my case

used to have them quite often. as you get older you give less of a fuck and accept things, they just go away on their own. as regards to what foreverrecession said, yeah when i used to get these i would just distract myself until they went away. so the solution is having more external and physical issues to deal with it so you stop focusing on pointless rumination and introspection

I was thinking of taking medications such as Clomipramine to reduce them jfl

These kinds of mental disciplines are considered prerequisites even in Jewish mysticism for those who strive for the ein sof in kaballah :soy::soy::soy:

I just try to ignore them. Try to not let them bother me. I don't anticipate actually acting on them. They occur less now but more when I am feeling certain ways. (hard to explain)

Yes, it usually works for me initially. Having these thoughts usually don't last more than 5 minutes, but during the day I can have up to 10 of them, generate long-term frustration.
 
oh sorry page got cut off i didnt finish reading the whole thing. regarding your "problem", i think that's perfectly normal. maybe your religion says it's bad? ie thought crime. as long as you have no compulsion to act upon it, it's not an issue. i think about killing people all the time, it really never stopped me from enjoying myself. on an average day i think about killing at least a dozen people. it's like when you think about pushing your best friend off a cliff when he's standing on the edge. we all have these thoughts

As someone afflicted by intrusive thoughts, i just don't find your solution convincing.

From what I’ve studied in all schools of mysticism, meditative practices lead to a 4th state of consciousness apart from the normal waking, sleep and deep sleep states, where one distinctly feels separate from his own mind’s functions. It’s that ego or id component that evaporates in degrees to the extent that one can completely rest in their own “self.”

Ofc I’m a hedonist so can’t take up these practices in earnest but it’s certainly helped me over time kind of like working out the brain muscle

So much for me. I find it more helpful to take anxiolytics such as escitalopram and sertraline which relieve the stress and anxiety of OCD more easily
