How orgasms can destroy your motivation.

I want to preface this by saying that this is my first actual thread with effort put into it. I am also not a neurologist. Feedback would be appreciated :feelsgood:

As we all know, masturbating doesn't necessarily cause a substantial increase or decrease in the levels of your testosterone. There isn't enough evidence to conclude that sex and orgasm do either. Studies show that time and time again, there is no real big difference in the testosterone of someone who does it and someone who doesn't. But, this doesn't mean that masturbation and orgasming won't have negative effects. To understand why, we must know what happens during an orgasm on a deeper level.

Endorphins dull the perception of pain and create a sense of euphoria. Dopamine is heavily involved in reward pathways, motivation, movement, and habit reinforcement. Prolactin stimulates the breasts to produce milk in women and modulates sexual and immune functions, while having a secondary role in modulating the release and reception of its brothers. The latter two are very important, as their relationship is instrumental to influencing your mood.

Consult the graph. As you can see, during orgasm, dopamine spikes before prolactin also increases, and inhibits it. Dopamine is shut down and returns to baseline levels. However, this balance is shaky. Prolactin continues to be released weeks after orgasm, meaning that if you orgasm again within that range, the increases in prolactin may "stack" and start dragging your dopamine baseline down (1 - see sources). This is a major reason as to why hypersexual people (and those who consume copious amounts of porn) are more susceptible to depression. Oxytocin promotes the activity of 5-alpha-reductase, which is the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of test --> dht. (6) Dht is much more androgenic than testosterone. The absurd claims of NoFap and semen retention communities can be explained by this. I have experienced it myself, first hand, when I stopped beating my meat every time I got bored. Suddenly, I want to look for side hustles. Suddenly, I actually want to study. It's all due to the neuroendocrine effects that orgasms have.
