Eh, you probably only need to have like 115 IQ for that

Above 115 is enough for all industry jobs. You basically do the same shit every day

Unironically a sociology researcher is prob smarter than the most analytical jobs in industry.

I was a SWE intern over summer, and the work you do is a walk in the park compared to academic computer science

I agree. Once your IQ is around 115, it comes down to discipline to get into any job that isn't something like medicine.

Quants get payed 250-500K a year I don't think its easy
Yeah but IQ and job level is only weakly correlated. You only need a very high IQ to be a doctor or a physicist.

Quant is 145+, preferably 160 but not gigachad or he'd just steamroll everyone

130 can do some useful analytics though. It is enough for many degrees in STEM, even graduate work

Physics is king of all and they average slightly higher. There are domain specific talents which become salient with quant specialization, so it may well be the case for example that not just any random physicist off the street will do; that being said, seeing the overall picture correctly while being smart enough is the mogger position

Every quant being hired is a top tier math/stat/cs student with undergraduate research from top tier universities

the ones that aren’t undergrads are PhDs. But going to grad school just to become a quant is a very poor financial decision.

The job itself doesn’t have stable pay, you’re not gonna be racking in 500k every year.

This is all assuming you mean quant researcher. You can be a quant dev or analyst pretty easily, you just won’t be payed as much.

Nah fam, 140+ IQ or death 🤦🏻‍♂️. If you're unironically having to ask this, you're prolly not 130 IQ.

Quants are mostly people with phds or masters in rigorous fields like Maths, Physics and CS from elite universities. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the average IQ of high-end quants at top-tier firms is 145+ (99.9th percentile). It's probably the best way to make as much money as possible as an employee, but the IQ you need to get in is ridiculous. I would rather go for software dev at FAANG where you still need to be really smart, but not genius level smart like you need to become a quant.

Wdym there are plenty of people in medicine with 115-110 IQ

Not really, maybe the lower level stuff but not a General practice doctor or a surgeon.

Yeah I should pick something easier I've always been regarded as smart but my ADHD holds me back a lot. I only win when I compete with dumber kids. Whenever I'm up against smart people I lose because they are more focused then me I've always relied on my IQ to give me an advantage in this field it looks like I would be fucked

ADHD depending on what exactly yours is, might not be such a handicap, but tbh it does sound like you need more raw horsepower

No shame in that; most people in the world have to get along in life with less than that and are doing ok. I say that even though this world is going to shit

General practice doctors are 120 IQ at most on average. Surgeon you might be right on but most general doctors and nurses are peak Midwits.

You’ve been watching too many episodes of Billions

Any future “quant” wouldn’t even second guess themselves they’d be such a giga nerd they’d probably be studying right now for fun or posting on wallstreetoasis

Well yeah, being a nurse isn't that impressive.

yeah maybe it is over I will never be exceptional in anything

Even people in med school. I have a lot of friends who are in Med school. They are by no means dumb and they are hard working but compared to a CS student they are not that smart. Medical requires extreme time investment more then extreme IQ. You only need moderate IQ and high work ethic

The fact that you actually considered being a quant though shows you will probably make good money somehow

What about iBanking then private equity path?

I have heard if you shoot for quant by taking some high level math course business/CS degrees even if you fail you still end up with a good degree.

If I fail to become a quant I will still end up in data analytics either way

Not quite although I am in coding classes. I just would say they are smarter from experience medicine is just very overhyped Mathematicians Physicists ect are all much smarter and deserve as much respect.

Biologists, physicists and mathematicians are probably the smartest. I think they average 130.

Biology majors are not that smart unless they are at top tier unis. At my retail job I worked with a few Bio majors its only a decent major if you want to be a HS science teacher or if you go to medical school

Not that smart but smarter then Psych majors. Depends on the reason behind it if you are taking it to go to medical school its not a bad idea

give a ranking for majors
It depends if they go to medical school or not. Also same thing applies with other majors Poli sci and a law degree is a good combination.

Also depends on your school anything lower then a top 40 US school you need to be in STEM or a few Business degrees probably but Poli Sci or History at Harvard is probably as good as CS at a state school like University of Washington

Very smart.

smarter than me

There’s plenty of people in medicine with bang average IQs.

All the medics I knew just worked hard and were very NT

I don’t think IQ varies as much as you think it does course to course.

An above average IQ is enough for all but the absolute hardest degrees and the top unis.

If you’re talking about postgrad and phd work then that’s another level up.

Plenty of people with just average - slightly above average intelligence who just work hard and enjoy the subject doing STEM degrees

You just need to work hard
