How the fuck do I get layers in my hair

How do I genuinely tell my barber to give me layers without him fucking my hair short. I have mid hair I would say but not that long as you see in those middle part layers type shit. Just tell me how the fuck do I get him to comprehend what I want. All i want is more texture and volume so it stays a bit. When I style it no products it comes out flat from all fucking directions. I got pretty straight hair.
