How this site traps you in a dopamine loop and why you need to stop offtopic rotting

I'll be back soon with a response that presents a more nuanced explanation of the situation regarding why some users still decide to spend so much time here, but luckily, now I have to go outside and touch the grass for like 2-3 hours, because the weather is too good right now to waste it on the internet.. :veryCat: :FeelsLoveMan: :HYPERSL:

I think were all subconsciously aware that were stuck in a dopamine loop here, but maybe not aware of how detrimental it truly is. We judge people who do meth. But it makes you question whats worse, a drug that gives you a high for a 4 hours, or .org which keeps you busy wasting time for 8.

You worded it nicely, i think .org makes you forget just how bad the consequences of inaction can truly be. No one condemns inaction the same way they condemn obvious negative actions. But it is arguably worse to see your life go by so quickly with nothing to show for it.

Over for black brah

This thread is a come-back to a thread i made yesterday, in which over 2 pages of people admitted they ALSO didn't looksmax at all, and are there only to rot on offtopic.

This was pretty eye opening.

A lot of admins like saying that this site ISN'T a rotting place.

View attachment 5151349

But.. obviously this couldn't be away from the truth, i mean, even the person writing this thread, has 20000 posts with 19000 of them being in offtopic, and there's countless of users just like me.

Countless of users with thousands of reps, thousands of post, that completed barely any looksmaxes and barely any effort at life in general.

I want to make an analogy that will make starting this topic easier:

A lot of us saw an animation about drugs, called 'nuggets' - It's main message was "drug addiction is basically constantly chasing the high"

Well i'd like to compare that to the offtopic section of this site. As a user you're constantly chasing the high of this little thing right here:

View attachment 5151358 - but wait.. that doesn't look like the big DOPAMINE hit you always want..

how about this?

View attachment 5151366

Now we're talking! Imagine the numbers of replies, the reps, the quotes! The so many mentions that you can reply to.

All that is to say, you think that you're addicted to the content of the site, when it couldn't be further from the truth. You're addicted to the rewards:

The reputation points.
The notifications.
The quotes.
The reactions.
The feeling of opening the site and seeing a red number in the top corner.

At some point you stop making posts because you have something to say, and you start making them because you're chasing the next hit of your sweet notification dopamine..

And when the bell button looks like this:

View attachment 5151375

You hit this point:

View attachment 5151377

And the high stops.. so you sit more on the site, make another post, another comment, another 5 notificaitons, maybe 10, maybe 20? who knows, the suprise is half the fun right?

And this is why offtopic is the best dopamine simulator for your brain, aka. the best drug.

Imagine you post a detailed, 10000 word guide on looksmaxing sub forum.

No replies?

first bump

second bump

still no replies? maybe i should give up, it's embarassing aleady..

nah, third bump

finally, someone replies, your brain floods with dopamine, just for the reply to be 'dnr'

View attachment 5151391

This is the lowest point you can be, so you go to offtopic chasing that high there instead of looksmaxing.

And then, ask yourself this:

Which thread gives more dopamine?

- A detailed guide that gets 3 replies?

- Or a low effort bait thread that gets 150 notifications, 40 reactions and 10 pages of arguments?

The anwser is obvious.

And of course, the 'viral' posts are never related to looksmaxing.

Why would they be?

Nobody gets 50 notifications from posting "remember to floss."

Nobody gets 10 pages from posting "eat healthy and sleep well."

The dopamine is in the arguments.
The drama.
The bait posting.
The negativity.

This is exactly why offtopic is the most popular subforum here, despite it being a looksmaxing site.

It's all deeply embedded in the endless 'doomscroll' dopamine, the endless slop.

I also frequently compare offtopic to a slot mashine. The same way in a slot mashine most pulls give you jackshit, but the one in a 100 pulls gives you the jackpot, the same way in offtopic most of your posts don't fulfill your dopamine desires untill the offtopic gods bless you with 50 notifications, and that's what you're truly chasing, that's what keeps you coming back.. (funnily enough i also say the same comparison about league of legends)

So, why should you stop?

Because one day you'll wake up and realize that absolutely nothing changed. Yeah your post count went up, maybe you even hit your big goal of imaginary forum post to rep ratio!..

But.. did you make any progress in real life in that time? Do you truly think the 50 hours you spent on offtopic helped you in any way? Yeah maybe you gained some information, maybe some meaningless conversations.. but you also gain information on tiktok, and that's one of the worst dopamine addictions out there.

The worst part about offtopic isn't that it inherently ruins your life or is painful, it's that it's actually comfortable. You can sit here for hours chasing the high and feel absolutely nothing, yet the first thing you'll do in the morning is check your org notifications.

And you joined because you wanted to looksmax. You wanted help with a gym schedule or maybe learn a thing or two, but then you sit down on offtopic for '20' minutes, have a few laughs, have a few meaningful conversations, some cool notifications.. and suddenly it's been 6 hours.

Then, suddenly it's been a month

Then suddenly a year, and thousands of posts.

And you've done no meaningful progress. You didn't talk to that one girl, stopped going to the gym regularily, and maybe even gave up on your diet, in favor of rotting. I mean what's the point anymore right? Might aswell rot some more after you're done reading this thread.

I know this feeling, because i've been there myself.

The reality is that nobody is going to care how many reputation points you had on Looksmax.org in ten years.

Nobody will care that you were a lookism legend.

Nobody is going to care about your post count.

Nobody is going to care that your eviscaration thread got 105 pages.

But people will care if you're healthy.

People will care if you're successful.

People will care if you're confident.

People will care if you built something.

And most importantly, you'll care.

Because at the end of the day, a notification is gone after 5 seconds.

The things you build in real life stay with you.

The forum should be something you use.

It shouldn't be something that uses you.

I'll most likely be self banning after this thread finished it's rounds to focus on IRL activities. Hopefully people that struggle with IRL use this as an incentive.

You might think to yourself that it's just a forum, but it's much more than that. At first i wanted to say that it's an escape from reality, but it's much closer to the replacament of it. Before this forum i had a girlfriend, i had 20000 steps a day in deep forests, and i was at the absolute peak of my looks - after a few months on this site i have none of the above.

Think about how you want to spend your hours. Actually improving your life, or being addicted to offtopic.

Self ban for a week, maybe a month, and see how much your life improves. You might not want to listen to me, but why not test it yourself?

Peace out.

Peace out.

if there wasnt reps or evb gained a rep automatically for post no one would be on offtopic

This thread is a come-back to a thread i made yesterday, in which over 2 pages of people admitted they ALSO didn't looksmax at all, and are there only to rot on offtopic.

This was pretty eye opening.

Peace out.

Wouldn’t it be more efficient to just not engage with any user? In the sense of talking and answering but not befriending with anyone on this site.

Obviously this will boost productivity yet you can miss out the cherry on the top: Insider advice, good surgeons, a rating from someone u trust etc.

And those cherries do have some weight

i personally can't go on for more than half an hour without checking org, it's the first thing i do every morning, and will probably still check my notifications when i self ban.. although i hope to get rid of that habit with time.

their reputation has nothing to do with being an org incel. you can have never stepped foot on it and still get lucky and get famous from tiktok..

sure, sometimes your org rep helps you with getting deals and stuff, i've seen some high-rep users taking advantage of being known on org, but in most cases your post count and rep count have absolutely 0 value in the real life world

Self banning isn’t for me. I watch the threads but then I can’t reply and it makes everything worse…

The real question is: after banning .org (cold turkey blocker) how do we replace it? :feelshehe:
Yeah the point is that when you self ban and you get angry that you can't reply to posts, you get discouraged from using the site at all.. atleast that's my plan. When i self banned for the first time for about a week i actually didn't check the site as often as i thought i would, so i'm curious if i'll even want to return after a month.

As for replecements, i'm hoping to use my neurodivergence (adhd, autism) to hyperfocus on self improvement and forget about online rotting at all. Other than that i think video games are way better than doomscrolling forums.

Back last year i was so focused on improving myself that i barely played video games or used my phone and went to the gym every day without a single break for 6 months straight. So i'm hoping i can lock in like that again.

I guess cold turkey will always be hard no matter what, especially with dopamine addiction. You either tough it out or you're stuck in here forever.

Wouldn’t it be more efficient to just not engage with any user? In the sense of talking and answering but not befriending with anyone on this site.

Obviously this will boost productivity yet you can miss out the cherry on the top: Insider advice, good surgeons, a rating from someone u trust etc.

i think user interaction is the only beneficial part of the forum lol, if you have any friends on the forum the best thing you can do is add them off site (instagram, discord, etc.) and keep in touch with them after quitting the forum. Online friends are always nice if you're friendless IRL which is a case for many forum users

sure, sometimes your org rep helps you with getting deals and stuff, i've seen some high-rep users taking advantage of being known on org, but in most cases your post count and rep count have absolutely 0 value in the real life world

Self banning is useless its not a sustainable way. I think you should just block offtopic at all and call it a day. Lurking in rating section or looksmaxxing question will at least provide a benefit
As for replecements, i'm hoping to use my neurodivergence (adhd, autism) to hyperfocus on self improvement and forget about online rotting at all. Other than that i think video games are way better than doomscrolling forums.
i also have adhd and autism -twin
Back last year i was so focused on improving myself that i barely played video games or used my phone and went to the gym every day without a single break for 6 months straight. So i'm hoping i can lock in like that again.

I guess cold turkey will always be hard no matter what, especially with dopamine addiction. You either tough it out or you're stuck in here forever.

i think user interaction is the only beneficial part of the forum lol, if you have any friends on the forum the best thing you can do is add them off site (instagram, discord, etc.) and keep in touch with them after quitting the forum. Online friends are always nice if you're friendless IRL which is a case for many forum users
Yes i dont know what to do when i get voices again or smth bad happens

where do you reckon could I talk to ppl? Discord aint any better. I suppose discord without any server is good but here again
knowing ppl on .org -through rotting- has benefitted my life since now i know more surgeons i would have never found out about, but im not really sure at the end of the day

lemme know what you think big boss

You might think to yourself that it's just a forum, but it's much more than that. At first i wanted to say that it's an escape from reality, but it's much closer to the replacament of it. Before this forum i had a girlfriend, i had 20000 steps a day in deep forests, and i was at the absolute peak of my looks - after a few months on this site i have none of the above.

yeah but you won FUOTY which means much more than allat right 💁‍♂️

nah seriously just because of this bitchass post, i'm gonna compile a list of all the org threads that have led to actual changes in my lifestyle in the time i've spent here. Since we joined in the same week and shi

not my fault u got lost in the sauce 🥷

we all know offtopic is a separate forum thats why u gotta rot on looksmaxing every once in a while. Of course every time you do that it will only be 10-12 days before 99% of the threads become repetitive and you just go back to OT... the gc will usually alert me if someone drops an actual banger in LM
