How to ask dentist for NHS ortho referral?

I have a recessed maxilla and I want to see an ortho, but I can’t afford to go private. How do I ask for a referral without sounding nd? I’m in the uk so they’ll brush me off unless I have a solid, practical reason for wanting one.

Do you think breathing issues would qualify? E.g nose feels blocked most of the time, especially when lying down.

you can definitely mention breathing issues, but your dentist will normally consider that more of an ENT or sleep medicine referral than an orthodontic one. If your recessed maxilla is contributing to narrow arches, crowding, or an overjet, you’ll want to frame the breathing concern as a secondary to the bite problem
