I dislike the looksmax guides where they overly explain everything or overdo the decorating (e.g. inputting coloured gradients into the text)

Kinda depends on what the guide is. I wouldn't really trust anyone to do the research for you but like practical guides or easy to understand stuff like the coloring guide is the type of thing which is helpful.

Ooh yeah with that I feel like it would take a pretty long time to actually know what you are talking about. I'd basically take whatever people are telling you to do and lower it by like 2 levels (as in like 2 levels less extreme).
