Hello boys,
one aspect of aesthetics that is often looked over is the ratio between your zygomatic width and your lip width (ZLR). Let's take a look at Sean O'Pry for reference.
Obviously he is very good looking, but you can tell the mouth does seem a little bit narrow. Let's take the measurements now:
Going off of these lines is just a very rough calculation, but it'll do for now. Using a ruler to take measurements and dividing the zygomatic width by the width of the lips, we now get a ratio of 2.65. Let's take a look at another model, Chico.
Using the same formula his comes out to be 3.12. This is higher and his ratio does look somewhat better than that of Sean O'Pry. Measuring the ratios of other models, the ideal comes out to be at around 3-3.10 approximately.
How to measure it yourself:
Again, going off of pictures with lines on them isn't the best way to take this measurement. Ideally you want to put your head between a sliding door and close it as far as possible, then measure the gap between it. For your lip width you want to stand around 20cm away from your mirror, close 1 eye and then put your ruler to the point where your lips meet and measure from there to the other side.
Good ratios:
We determined that a very good ratio is around 3-3.10. That doesn't mean that deviations from it are bad, as is obvious by looking at Sean O'Pry. You can't be too far off through. When you start getting too close to 4 or even further, you are in incel tier ZLR. The same principle applies if you are below 2.15, at that point your lips are probably covering the entire distance left to right in your lower third.
What to do if you are in incel tier ZLR?
Surgery is obviously the easiest solution. Find out what the actual problem is: is your zygomatic width too small, or are your lips simply too wide? Or the other way around, is your zygomatic width fine but your mouth is too narrow? Compare yourself to the perfect zygomatic width and the perfect lip width. For zygos I would recommend Eppley implants or get a bilateral zygomatic osteotomy. For your lips you have to find out if you are suffering from narrow jaws, if yes get them widened. It's hard to fix a mouth that is too wide, maybe try to find a surgeon who will cut away some skin. If you can't get surgery quickly, I would recommend bonesmashing on your zygos to give you some advancement and if you want to fraud your lip width for the forseeable future you just have to walk around with a very slight smile for wideness or press your lips together slightly for less width.
Final words:
A good or bad ZLR can make or break a face. Your mouth, compared to your zygomatic width, can end up looking like a chelsea smile or an ass that is turned sideways if it's too narrow. Try to work on making your ZLR better and plan your other surgeries according to this.
Good luck
