Rule number 1: Stop trying to mew.

Focus on your breath and posture. Do not use any tension on your face, tongue, neck or anywhere. Pretend they’re all invisible. Release all tension.

Mewing will come naturally after you learn how to pose and breathe correctly. No physical activity requires you to use a lot of force, everything is natural unless you’re doing it wrong.

How to pose: Posing straight is important for your body to relax and stay in place. Push your chest slightly out, neck straight, look up. Don’t look down. Looking down crams your neck and creates unnecessary tension. Probably the stupidest misinformation I’ve heard. You’re not boxing. Looking up releases tension from your neck. Don’t pull your arms back, push your chest out. Don’t exaggerate the posture. Don’t overly do anything. Just align your back and neck straight. Stand like a soldier. Be relaxed and you should notice your tongue will gradually stay on the roof of your mouth without trying.

How to breathe: Breathing creates proper airflow and relaxation in your upper body which lets your tongue and throat relax naturally instead of forcing it. Don’t let the front of your body puff out when inhaling. Some people breathe from their chest or stomach. But singers breathe from their lower back. This creates more air capacity and fully releases tension from the neck and tongue. Stand up straight, push your abdomin inward as you inhale, this directs the air to your back or buttocks area. And push your abdomen outward as you exhale.

This technique is important for not just singing but any physical activity that requires breath. Mewing is just a byproduct. Mewing incorrectly with force can potentially damage your throat or face. Ironically singing is also a byproduct too. You don’t get good at singing by trying to sing, you learn to breathe properly and everything including singing and projection comes after. Everything should stay relaxed and natural. You can try some yoga or swimming which requires relaxation and posture exercises which will then help your breathing and posture as well.
