Ce-Rh Theory For Reducing Global Warming
Ce and Rh
Cerium switches between two oxidation statesCe4+<>Ce3+
This makes cerium oxide, CeO2 is good at storing and releasing oxygen. Oxygen in CeO2 can work in redox reactions.
Rhodium is a effective transition metal catalyst. Rh surfaces activate such as CO, H2 and hydro carbons, making difficult reactions happen at low temperatures.
So the combination is
CeO2 provides oxygen storage/redox chemistry, and Rh provides active places for breaking and rearranging greenhouse gas molecules.
Methane
Methane is much more effective in trapping heat than CO2 over short time lengths. One possible thing would be using a CeO2–Rh to destroy methane before it reaches the atmosphere. The reaction is:
CH4+2O2>CO2+2H2O
This doesn't eliminate carbon but it converts methane into CO2 but it can significantly reduce the short term warming effect of the carbon.
The interesting part is how CeO2 could help Rh.
At the catalyst base, Ce4+/Ce3+ can provide reactive oxygen, while Rh activate the C-H bonds in the methane.
A simpler cycle is
CH4RhCHx∗
Then with oxidation:
CHx*+O*>COx+H2O
CO₂ recycling
You could take it further and try to convert CO2 into chemicals or fuels that can be useful. One possible Reaction is CO2+4H2>CH4+2H2O
This is CO₂ methanation.
The issue is making methane only helps climate change if hydrogen comes from a low carbon source and methane is contained and recycled and not released.
Another route is producing carbon monoxide
CO2>CO
CO can be used as stock for the chemical synthesis.
CeO2 is weird because its oxygen can interact with CO2
CO2+VO>CO+O
VO represents the oxygen vacancy.
Rh could maybe isolate the reactions used to break and redo the CO2. But its just a theory. None of you are gonna read ts, high effort asf too.
