In May 2015, police in La Plata, Maryland, responded to a disturbing scene. A woman had been seen pushing her 3-year-old son on a swing - for nearly two full days.

The mother, 24-year-old Romechia Simms, had been at the playground for up to 44 hours straight.

When authorities approached, they realized the boy, Ji'Aire Lee, had already passed away.

An autopsy confirmed Ji'Aire died from hypothermia and dehydration. There were no signs of trauma or foul play.

Simms had a documented history of severe mental illness, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. She had been discharged from a hospital just days.

Her mother had tried to get her extended care, warning she wasn't stable - but nothing happened.

No charges were filed. Authorities ruled Ji'Aire's death a tragic result of untreated mental illness.

The image of a mother pushing her lifeless child on a swing haunts those who remember it.
