How to use concealer under eyes without it being obvious?

I bought a concealer stick before and when I put a little bit under my eyes it made no difference and you could still see the dark circles. I tried putting more on but then it looked shiny like makeup and was really obvious. I kind of gave up on concealer after that. Is there any way to use it without it being obvious?
