I think it's less about associating white people with good traits but it's more about associating black/brown people with bad traits.

Colonialism/slavery introduced a number of negative sterotypes for non-white people from South America all the way to South East Asia and everything in between. Stereotypes which ethnics still have to fight to this day. Stereotypes which affect how they are treated.

If these stereotypes didn't exist, there would be much more of an even playing field between whites and non-whites

It really depends on how they were raised up, and these opinions can also change. As in you can go from someone who worships whites, to someone who doesn't anymore. Ethnics are very much taught to hate themselves from the get-go. They have to fight against constant reminders which tell them that they are inferior.

If this happened to any white person, they would hate being white too. It's not just a natural thing to prefer white people.
