What hymen repair surgery

Hymenoplasty (also called hymenorrhaphy) is a minor surgical procedure that reconstructs or repairs the hymen—a thin membrane at the vaginal opening.

How the surgery works (core idea)

The goal is to create a thin membrane again at the vaginal opening by:

  • stitching together remaining tissue or
  • creating a new membrane using nearby vaginal tissue

That reconstructed tissue may later tear (like a natural hymen might), but outcomes vary.

What happens during the procedure

1. Preparation & anesthesia

  • You lie on a surgical table (similar position to a gynecological exam).
  • The area is cleaned.
  • Local anesthesia or general anesthesia is used so you don’t feel pain.

2. Examining the hymen area

  • The surgeon looks for remaining fragments of the hymen.
  • If there is scar tissue, it may be trimmed to create clean edges.

3. Reconstruction (main surgical step)

There are two main techniques:

A. Stitching existing tissue (most common)

  • The surgeon brings the torn edges together.
  • They use fine dissolvable stitches to reconnect them.

B. Creating a new hymen (if little tissue remains)

  • A small flap of vaginal lining (mucosal tissue) is used.
  • This tissue is shaped into a thin membrane-like structure.

Advanced techniques may involve:

  • stitching in multiple layers for strength
  • shaping a small opening for normal bodily functions

4. Closing the area

  • The reconstructed tissue is carefully sutured.
  • The opening is made slightly smaller to mimic a natural hymen.

5. Completion

  • The procedure usually takes 30–90 minutes.
  • It’s typically outpatient (you go home the same day).

⏳ Recovery and healing

  • Mild swelling, spotting, or discomfort for a few weeks
  • Most people resume normal activities in 1–2 days
  • Full healing: about 6–8 weeks

During recovery:

  • No tampons or penetration for several weeks
  • Hygiene and sometimes antibiotics are recommended
