Hypergamy and Dating Standards: What the Research Actually Shows

This is a breakdown of the major studies on how men and women differ in dating selectivity, height preferences, and attractiveness standards. All figures come from peer-reviewed research or large-scale platform data. No opinion, just numbers.

Swipe and Selectivity Data

Women are consistently 3 to 10 times more selective than men across every major dating platform that has been studied.

Economists use something called a Gini coefficient to measure inequality. 0 means everything is perfectly equal, 1 means one person has everything.

Tinder's Gini coefficient for male attractiveness is 0.58, which means dating on Tinder has higher inequality than 95% of the world's national economies.

In practical terms: the bottom 80% of men are competing for the bottom 22% of women, while the top 78% of women are competing for the top 20% of men.

Height Preferences

Women impose hard height requirements at roughly 4 times the rate men do. The preferred height gap is almost identical for both sexes at around 11 cm, but women enforce it as a dealbreaker far more often.

Real couple data

Gillis and Avis (1980) looked at 720 real couples in the US and UK. Only 1 out of 720 had a taller woman. By pure chance you would expect around 1 in 50. The actual rate is 14 times lower than chance, so the preference is not just talk.

Who goes unmatched

SwipeStats data across 294 million swipes shows the median man gets a 2.04% match rate. The bottom 78% of men by attractiveness are effectively competing for the bottom 22% of women. The top 20% of men receive the majority of female attention. This is not an exaggeration, it is what the raw numbers show.

Male loneliness statistics

A 2021 Survey Center on American Life report found that 15% of men have no close friends, up from 3% in 1990. Men under 30 are now more likely to be romantically uninvolved than women under 30 for the first time since data has been collected on it. Pew Research (2022) found 63% of men under 30 are single vs 34% of women the same age.

Height in the real world

Only around 15% of the US male population is 6ft or taller. The majority of women on dating apps list 6ft as a minimum preference. That means the stated minimum requirement of most women filters out roughly 85% of the male population on height alone before any other factor is considered.

The numbers do not balance

If the top 20% of men are receiving the majority of female attention and the bottom 80% are competing for what is left, a large portion of men are going to come up short by default. The data does not suggest this is changing. SwipeStats shows women's match rates increase with age while men's decline sharply after 21.

Cross-Cultural Mate Preference Data

Women's preference for higher-status, higher-resource men holds across every country that has been studied, including countries with high gender equality.

  • Buss (1989) studied mate preferences across 37 countries and found the same pattern in all of them
  • A replication study across 45 countries with over 14,000 participants confirmed that women prefer older, higher-resource men in every single country regardless of how equal that country is
  • An Israeli online dating study found the same thing even in a sample where women outnumbered men nearly 2 to 1, meaning women were not being selective because of abundance of choice

The Attractiveness Rating Gap

OKCupid data (Rudder, 2009-2011) showed something that gets cited constantly because the gap is that large.

  • Men rate women's attractiveness on a roughly normal bell curve, spread fairly evenly across the scale
  • Women rate over 80% of men as below average
  • Men rate around 60% of women as average or above
  • The most attractive women receive 5 times as many messages as an average woman
  • Two thirds of all male messages go to the top one third of women

This is not a dating app quirk. The same pattern shows up in speed dating studies, personal ad response rates, and real-world couple formation data. The gap is consistent and has been replicated multiple times.

Dating apps are the 1 SMV indicator the average man can use to see their value. You will attract exactly what you're capable of attracting.

I made this thread to give an onsite on the current modern situation. Some people really don't understand how crazy it is, Stop being a fucking cuck you piece of shit.
