I've been wanting to do this for awhile, everyone in philosophytok are trying so hard to debunk hypergamy?
are they retarded. Prob all sub 3s coping to the max
Anyways here:
Instrumental Rationality
Hypergamy can be philosophically grounded in instrumental rationality, the idea that rational agents tend to prefer means that they believe will help achieve their desired ends. If a girl values things such as financial security, stability, social protection, or a higher standard of living, then preferring a partner who possesses greater overall status can be instrumentally rational as those traits are believed to contribute toward those ends. This provides a coherent philosophical explanation for why preferences toward higher status or more resourceful partners exist.
Reproductive Strategy Argument
Hypergamy can also be shown through an evolutionary strategic framework. If throughout ancestral environments, access to greater resources, protection, social influence, or status tended to increase the survival or reproductive prospects of offspring, then psychological dispositions favoring partners who possessed those characteristics could potentially have been favored by natural selection. The philosophical point is that a recurring behavioral tendency can have an evolutionary explanation if the tendency historically provided an adaptive advantage.
Revealed Preference Argument
The principle of revealed preference provides another way of conceptualizing hypergamy. What people say they value and what they consistently choose can sometimes diverge, so repeated choices provide evidence about underlying preferences. If an individual repeatedly has the opportunity to choose between otherwise comparable partners but consistently selects the partner with greater status, resources, or social position, that behavior gives us reason to infer that those characteristics possess some value to them.
Means Ends Reasoning
Hypergamy can also arise from ordinary means ends reasoning without requiring someone to consciously identify as hypergamous. Suppose a person values some end E, such as financial security or social stability, and believes that characteristic X in a partner makes E more attainable. If they rationally connect X with E, then they have an instrumental reason to prefer X. Simply explained: end + belief that X promotes that end to reason to prefer X. Therefore, a preference for a partner who possesses greater resources or status can emerge simply from rational preference formation, even if the individual never explicitly thinks, I want someone above me
Hypergamy is a historically documented and empirically measurable mating pattern, particularly with respect to income, resources, status, education, and looks
Idk how that's so hard to understand for some
