I am about to undergo elastics to correct my overbite, I will record my progress, to prove definitively if the maxilla undergoes recession

I have little choice over the matter, however in order to make the best of the situation I will take photos of my side profile, and record my progress monthly. In a year, I will upload this data, to in order to prove/dispel the theory of dental maxillary recession.

If it fucks up my face, in a few years I will undergo a very minor lefort 1, in order to correct any damage, and furthermore, ever so slightly improve my maxilla's position.

Good experiment. I had elastics and it didn’t affect shit, but maybe it varies person to person bc some people swear its a death sentence JFL.

It's easy to find conflicting accounts, however very few, if any people have provided evidence as to the damage. My orthodontist is pressuring me to use the bands, and essentially won't continue treatment without them unfortunately, however at the very least I will be among the first to upload the potential damage.

Try find a diff orthodontist, they should at least understand your concerns tf

yes, always feel free to change your ortho if you are not on the same page, especially as you have not started any treatment
if you do, you will find that almost every single one you visit will have a different opinion about your case jfl

you don't need to take any photos, as the ortho will have x-rays of your profile from before and after the treatment
it's not even really possible to see if the maxilla recesses from just a photo, since there are too many other factors

It's pretty terrible, but unfortunately, as I'm 17, I'm not the one paying. My parents would be unwilling change orthodontists half way through, or support my concerns in regards to bands, and especially with an uncooperative orthodontist it'd be impossible to convince them of the potential damage.

He tried to alleviate my concerns by saying "It will only move the teeth, not the jaw", and told me I "may become confused" if I read more into it.

My only choice, if recession is immanent, is to save up money whilst I'm in my 20s, in order to reverse it with lefort 1.

Consciously agreeing to this is not nice, and waiting for surgery til 20s is basically being with subpar looks during your prime years. Better to go with surgery first approach. If upper jaw is ahead, move lower jaw ahead, don't move upper jaw back (even teeth-only movement won't be good for you longer term). Depending on case, overbite may be corrected with lower jaw surgery, while with retracted upper jaw you are basically setting yourself up for bimax later, which is more invasive (also the younger you are, the better recovery you have).

I knew people with elastics and the ones that were recessed before were the same after and the ones that were forward grown were still forward grown
