Yes, the court also takes into account the kind of damage that is done to the other party. It cannot be a self-defence claim if you inflict more damage on them than they could've done to you. If your friend (if he was one) only beat them enough that they couldn't harm him anymore then they would've given him the same sentence as the other two.
