My batch mate scored the highest package in my uni. He is a quant trader in NYC and will be making $256k per year. Literally a quarter million right out of college. I personally hate quant and find it boring but damn do they pay well

Depends on if my job will become a WFH kind of thing or they'll call in person. Which hasn't been confirmed yet.

Stop coveting that crap. His life in NYC will surely be like something out of a dream, but will he really be more fulfilled than yourself 40 years from now? Or will he just have a very good cope?

I personally find quant to be very boring tbh. I like development and tech more. Quant is just number crunching

I never said he isn't high IQ. He almost had a perfect grade in all the courses and is 99th percentile in everything

I wouldn't do much if I had your skills. Just a meager living here or there. And of course have lots of children.

I know this really bad guy in Cambodia one time. He was a late 20's American tech guy. The guy would just lay about all day doing drugs hopping from place to place hanging out with backpackers. He would remotely fix tech problems or design websites for clients around the world while living that kind of life. Had a shit ton of money but spent very very little of it. Before he ended up in Sihanoukeville he had spent like 6 months in India raveling around permanently stoned on acid and hashish and doing other sorts of drugs with "gurus" or something.

I would have spent my 20's kind of like that but a little more straight edge. I probably would have really focused on living in a place just for the sake of learning the language. Like in that situation I could have easily lived in Osaka or whatever without having to worry about a visa. Just fly to Seoul or something for a holiday weekend every three months. It would allow me to volunteer or do something like standup, you know fun kinds of things in that country since my batteries wouldn't be draining by having to work at a school.

Yeah, quant pays crazy. You actually do need to be intelligent for your day to day role unlike most other areas of finance where you’re just posing and pushing presentations with data already given to you.

256k isnt that much at all in nyc and its like a bottom 40%ile quant trading salary to boot. What type of shop will he be at - prop shop, hedge fund, bank, asset management?

$256K total comp in NYC is objectively a top 2-3% income. Even in the quant world it is upper tier salary. Only if compared to the highest paying, most exclusive roles hedge funds and proprietary trading firms it is meh but these roles go for people with experience not new grads

Can't imagine having the drive to be perfect even after securing the best uni. That's why I am not there I guess

Ahhh yesss connections on an obscure Indian forum. Even if you start networking, it won’t take you far on its own.

If I were earning seven figures a year, why would I choose to connect with yo ass who offers no tangible value and is simply just chasing well…. “connections”?

Studycelling and securing 250k/yr career as mentioned in OP is a far more productive path. If you haven’t established real status and competence any muh networking is just cope. They will not make you rich unless you are capable enough to make them even more rich or benefit with something.

Obviously great salary, but it feels like a waste that finance attracts some of the highest IQ talent in the world, and as a consequence pulls them away from actually developing something truly life-changing.

As you say, quant and finance as a whole is just numbers crunching; nothing of value is created in the process.

You’re just putting words in my mouth. This “obscure Indian forum” is the last place for me to try and network on jfl. Like yes, let me network with a bunch of teens who are shitposting and race baiting all day long. And I did studycel like the dude OP posted and got my CS degree. The only difference between us is that my networking was shit and didn’t talk to anyone (which I strongly regret) and the individual op posted about most likely had a solid network beforehand hence why he made 6 figures straight out of college. But I can agree with your statement with networking on its own not taking you any far.

Unemployed at the moment since I graduated as of may this year and have been job searching like crazy for coding and cyber security positions. I wouldn’t even be surprised if I got a good paying job in another field tbh.
