I dunno if it's different where you're at but teens in the UK there's a massive emphasis on socialisation and everyone's connected one way or another, social status is another issue in itself, anything you do is like a permanent stain, my status has been shit for a while now without anything adding on to it being a fatcel and a neek (combination of nerd and geek there's tons of weird slang here but they specifically use that to describe me because I top the class when they're salty about grades
