The egg came first.
Why? Because genetic mutations occur in the DNA of organisms. At some point, a bird that was almost a chicken laid an egg, and due to a mutation in the embryo, the creature inside was the first true chicken. So, technically, the egg (laid by a non-chicken ancestor) came before the chicken.
