its something the americans did right when it came to remaking japanese horror. usually they add a feel good ending but in japan ghost stories always end up terribly. the grudge is another example of hollywood doing it right. but then you have shit like one missed call or the eye where they westernize it for the audiences and it takes away the greatness of the original. another good example is pulse with ian somerhalder. the original kairo was entirely different. no jump scares either whereas pulse is littered with it.
