i can't stick to a specific fashion style

it’s been years since i’ve bought any of the basic clothes i actually need.
now, whenever i go online to shop (since irl stores are just normiesludge), i feel completely lost about what to even search for.

i don’t know which style to commit to.
i’m not willing to spend all the money i’ve saved for surgery just so i can afford to dress in two very different aesthetics every day.
that's why i have to stick to 1 specific aesthetic for the moment.

i really want to wear those super colorful, traditionally “feminine-coded” scene outfits with alot of patterns and textures,
but at the same time i also want to dress in all black, skinny, more traditionally “masculine-coded” looks.

my closet is basically empty so i don’t have anything to build from, it’s going to take a while.
i’m just wondering which pieces i should prioritize first, and what can wait until later.

you need to find a common pattern among the aesthetics youre drawn to and go from there. the problem you can run into is that most of your wardrobe consists of unusual items and that makes everything clash
collect some pictures of styles you like and look at what clothing items are most common. those are the things you want to buy first and build a uniform off of that and then introduce more unusual or louder items
for example i have some statement clothes but most of the time its still just boots skinny jeans leather jacket
you need basics that look regular but still have something unique about them that expresses what you like if you want to still keep things interesting. for example i have a lot of slim fit jeans, its really simple so it doesnt clash and can be worn with anything on top but its still interesting enough because of subtle details that differentiate it from regular mall brand jeans. i have some saint laurent jeans but theyre all different in terms of material (100% cotton denim, stretch denim, corduroy), cut (skinny, more relaxed or bootcut), treatment (waxed or mud wash) etc.
if you want to look more normal while still expressing yourself authentically you can try to build most of your looks off of your uniform, then add one statement item that makes it interesting. thats what i do. spend less time online to avoid having too many separate influences that makes your style inconsistent

this actually really helped me, tysm. i’m gonna try cycling through pinterest and some forums to put together a whole slideshow of outfits, similar or different. i’ll then pinpoint what they have in common and focus on getting the basic pieces first (like your just said), since i was literally about to buy more statement stuff again without being aware. i always procrastinate on buying essentials and end up with one cool piece and nothing else that works with it.

i’ll start slowly and see if i can actually survive a full day in skinny here in france. if they’re comfortable, look good, and don’t make my proportions look off due to fat placement, i’ll look into getting higher quality versions so i don’t end up throwing money away on a mood swing.

will update you if i manage to get my hands on any decent pieces (although it's probably gonna be very basic), if not i’ll just stay quiet until i make move. vinted was fun for a while but i can’t seem to find many other reliable sites, so it’s been kinda hard to track down what i want, i'm sure i'll find a way.

also i think you’re right about cutting down on online influences a bit, that's probably why i'm so lost all the time. i’ll try to stick to a smaller range of inspiration cause this shit is overstimulating me everytime.

ive been spending less time online so my inspiration mainly comes from things i actually like so everything is more consistent now. i also had an issue with overspending on statement items without fully building the base first, but you really need most of your closet to be basics to have proper variety in your outfits and for them to be repeatable. also i really suggest you get a sewing machine, theres a lot of very expensive pieces you can recreate yourself and that makes it even better to me. theres also good alternatives for a lot of expensive brands that are good quality so if you have any more questions lmk
