i cold approached for the first time in over a year

ever since I got out of my last relationship almost 6 months ago, the thought of cold approaching was insanely scary. I watched a bunch of videos on how to do it and I pretty much learned everything about it however, something was just stopping me from taking the first step and saying the first word those this girl in my new class that started yesterday who I caught looking at me maybe one or twice and I saw her after class like 20 minutes later and it went like this.

her -my names _
me -it's nice to meet you _ my names _
her -it's nice to meet you too are you a first year?
me -nahh i'm a second. you sticking around for the event?
her -noo i wish i have to go home in a minute.
me -ah alright i don't wanna keep you all day, what's ur insta
*we exchange instas and say bye and she goes home*

later yesterday i messaged her and she sent back a dry response so i js left it at that. granted, i only really talked to her for like 20 seconds and i don't have the most amazing text game. i like to give girls a week of seeing eachother around or talking a bit before i think "yea she don't fw me" i do this because some girls are shy and warm up after talking a few times. any advice?
