I grew up on a diet that was mostly soy, rice, bread, butter, and other carb-heavy foods. I wasn't vegetarian, but meat was a pretty small part of my diet usually only once every 3–4 days, which is fairly common where I grew up.
I was also somewhat malnourished as a kid and was one of the shortest guy in my class. By the time I was around 13, I realized things weren't looking great growth wise, so I started eating a lot more carb calorie dense foods. It wasn't ideal nutrition, but it was better than nothing, and I eventually grew to be 5'11".
Given that my father is 5'9", I can't help but think that if I had grown up on a more protein rich, meatbased diet with consistently better nutrition, I might have ended up even taller. That's why I believe that if I put my future child on an optimal diet from an early age, there's a good chance they could surpass my height by several inches
