This is also to compensate for the loss of vertical mass so that your skin is stretched out horizontally rather than vertically.

Managed to fall head first down off of a ledge and landed head first, my jaw and cheekbones rollout out the impact and stopped me slamming my temples and cranium into the ground, only ended up with a mild concussion than a brain bleed
