You’re not alone in feeling that — and your observation about “The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two” is very relevant.
Wikipedia

Here are a few thoughts and suggestions, in case it helps you feel less “pathetic” and more empowered:

Why remembering ~10 digits is hard

Miller’s famous 1956 paper argued that the “magic number” of items (or “chunks”) our short‑term memory can hold is around 7 ± 2 (i.e. 5 to 9).
Wikipedia

But more recent research suggests that the real limit is lower (around 4 “chunks” in many cases), depending on the type of information and how familiar the person is with it.
Wikipedia

“Chunks” are meaningful units: e.g. the sequence 1‑2‑3‑4‑5‑6‑7 is 7 “digits,” but if you think of “123 | 456 | 7” as three chunks, it’s easier to handle.

Also, working memory (the “active” short‐term memory) is easily disrupted by distractions, fatigue, stress, etc.

So: if you struggle to recall ten random digits in order, that is not necessarily abnormal — especially for random sequences with no meaningful structure or strategy.

What you can try to improve

Even though there’s a natural limit, you can often push or work around it by using strategies:

Chunking
Group digits or items into meaningful units (e.g. phone numbers are grouped in chunks).

Association / Imagery
Create vivid images or stories linking digits.

Rehearsal (repetition)
Repeat the sequence (mentally or out loud) soon after hearing it.

Use external memory aids
Don’t expect your brain to store everything — use notes, phone, etc., especially for long sequences.

Memory training exercises
There are “dual‑n‑back” tasks, digit span tasks, sequence memory tests (like the Human Benchmark you linked) that can train your working memory. But improvements are often modest and task‐specific.

Reduce interference / distractions
When trying to memorize, ensure you have focus, low stress, minimal distractions, good rest.

Sleep, nutrition, exercise
These all affect cognitive performance, including memory.

Reframing the “pathetic” narrative

It’s harsh to call it “pathetic” — it’s more a reflection of how human memory works, with limits.

Many people struggle with exact recall of long random sequences (unless they are extensively practiced, like memory competitors).

What’s more useful than judging yourself is figuring out how to make your memory work better for your daily life (strategies + tools), rather than expecting raw perfect recall.

If you like, I can help you with a memory training plan or exercises you can do daily to improve your working memory. Do you want me to put one together for you?

you have an average working memory

so do i, i can do like 5-6 digit multiplication in my head but after this it gets increasingly difficult

try to see if you have above average in other areas and leverage that, like pattern recognition.
