Bill Russell = Clint Capela

Pele = Great player but would not be considered anywhere close to the best

Muhammad Ali = Not top 5 of all time in heavyweights

The competition is much much higher. I do not respect the 60s athletes as they would not perform near as well in this hyper competitive era yet they demand the same respect as modern athletes. And better yet society proclaims these guys as the best ever. Like the 60s were peak for sports and athletes stopped improving since then

ridiculous tbh

Comparison are made by assessing how much they dominated their respective competition. All those people would still be the best today with modern diet and training and peds.

I know someone was going to say that

Not true. The competition and exposure of all sports is much much higher than it was back in their times

Now you have kids dedicating their entire life starting from the age of 5 to box. Meanwhile many fighters had second jobs back then

yeah pele will be lost with today's pressing but raw comparisons are not accurate

it's about comparing peak levels and consistency

Then we should compare eras not all time

If we compare eras then Muhammad Ali would be considered the greatest in the 60s

but today he would not be able to perform nearly as well, yet he is proclaimed as the greatest.

It is flawed and hurts modern athletes tremendously to be compared to guys with far different circumstances

that's the fun in it

if you compare eras there are pros and cons, less science, medical technology, so we can just fantasize about scenarios,

what if a kid with Pele's raw talent were to born in this era, his formation would be different, he'd adapt to todays' pressing and versatility, the marketing towards him. but what ifs' are just mental games and not worth it, like those what if goku went ssj as a kid videos

there are people out there who legit research articles and old footage games to analyze old players performaces and compare them to current ones

hungary was a powerhouse in the 40s and 50s, by today standards they'd be destroyed but we can't disregard history like that

It's about the talent, those people were so talented that they completely changed how to play their respective sport. They were pioneers, and they had very few knowledge compared to today

Lol it’s natural for sports to evolve over decades

Now? More like 30 40 years ago. Nowadays 90% kids spent their entire childhood in front of a PC or a tablet LMAO. The competition is getting softer and softer every year. There is a reason why Messi CR7 Lewa Benzema Ibra are all playing so well at such an advanced age and don't come at me with the coping "muh they just take care of their bodies better now". No lol the game is getting easier with each passing year.
