I don’t trust communists

In the 1970s most people in the Soviet Union could not afford a telephone, and if you had a telephone at home you would be scared to use it because friends or neighbors could report you and you would have to explain where your money came from.

So if you had people who ratted on others just because of a telephone, how much can you trust them? Keep in mind that there are millions who ratted on others still alive today, and most rats are in Russia and Central Asia.

Ukraine is anti communism and more progressive so I think they don’t have as many rats.

I grew up in communist Romania and it was very similar. A phone in itself wasn't that expensive but you needed the communist party approval to get a telephone installed at home. You could wait even years for that and often you had to give bribes left and right until you finally had a phone. Everyone knew the phones were tapped so sensitive information was rarely discussed over the phone.

It’s very interesting because I was always convinced that corruption didn’t exist in the Soviet Union until recently. Clearly I was wrong.

Lol, it was widespread in all the communist countries, you had to give bribes and gifts every time you needed something, we were trained since kindergarten to bring flowers, candy and other gifts to our teachers, and this process continued until it became like second nature - whenever you went to a public institution, asked something from a bureaucrat, needed an electrician, plumber, etc., visited a doctor - you always brought something, it was simply natural, although many services were in theory supposed to be free.

I live in Central Asia and even though some things used to be better in the Soviet Union now you can at least leave. Back then you could not leave
