i taped the vents shut but he still breathes through the walls
every night i hear the soft wet sound outside my door like skin dragging slow across carpet
i do not check anymore
the first time i looked there was nothing
the second time there was a shadow bent wrong at the end of the hall
too tall too still like it forgot how to be human
now i keep my eyes closed because i know looking teaches him
my phone dies at the same minute every night
my dog stares at the corner and cries
the mirrors feel deeper now
not like glass
like open places
i covered one and woke up with the sheet folded on the floor
he likes when i pretend this is stress
he stands behind me when i brush my teeth
i see the shape over my shoulder but when i turn around the room is normal
too normal
like something cleaned itself up too fast
i stopped telling people because they smile before i finish
but i hear him breathing when they do
slow
happy
i think he wears my face when i sleep
i think he practices
the neighbors knocked this morning asking who was standing in my window for hours
i live alone
day 17

if i stop posting its because he finally learned how to open the door without hands
