It has such a fantastical aura, but until today, I had never been able to fully understand why.
To those who like Frank Sinatra, you'll know that he very often portrays himself as sort of 'loser' in his music. Or at least someone who can have very bad luck sometimes. "That's life" and "Under my skin" exemplify this well.
This song's lyrics are not like that at all. He meets a woman, and they instantly 'fall' in love, living like that forever.
Strangers in the night
Two lonely people we were strangers in the night
Up to the moment
When we said our first hello
Little did we know
Love was just a glance away
A warm embracing dance away, and
Ever since that night we've been together
Lovers at first sight, in love forever
It turned out so right
For strangers in the night
The instrumentation is extremely lush and other-worldly. Here comes the epiphany: The narrator of the song is daydreaming all of it, it never happened. Frank is not only wishing for this to come true for him, he made it so that the actual character is too. That's why there's so much tension in some parts, I think, despite the subject matter being entirely optimistic (too much so). This interpretation broke me.
