It's not that the attractive one will always be believed, it is that if you're ugly you need to put in x10 more effort into your credibility to come out on top from such a situation. If you're against someone hotter than you, better be sure to have all the evidence lined up to the fucking gram, because otherwise you're losing in almost all situations.
