At london unis where the demographics are diverse its impossible to find common groups.
If you go to a school where the teachers divide demographics into houses or whatever then your friendgroups are multi-ethnic - and if you're white you're conditioned to never SEE race.

There is a similar dynamic in California also. San Francisco's Chinatown, Japantown. Daly City with a huge Filipino community, Cupertino and Sunnyvale with the Chinese and Indians. Truth man. My mom came to Canada from Hong Kong in the 1990’s back when we had strict immigration. The quality of immigrant (including Indian immigrants) used to be so much higher back then.

You can argue that some regions / cities in the US hold a distinct ethnic identity

But what ultimately ended up happening is all of those groups assimilated into Americans. The Italians assimilated, the Irish assimilated, the Germans assimilated, they all assimilated.

Notice how the non-white ethnic enclaves are the ones that never assimilated in the grand scheme of things. Those people still hold allegiance and loyalty to their countries of ethnicity, not America.

The Chinese in China town see themselves as Chinese

True but the rate of immigration was VERY low back then in the 1980s so the immigrants were forced to integrate or die.

30+ years ago that was reliably true because they were forced to learn English. Now many local governments in the US enable those that do not speak English by providing them interpreters in medical clinics, government offices, and courts. And they provide separate classes for non English speaking students. Modern Technology is also enabling perpetual cultural segregation by providing non English speakers access to entertainment in their own language, and allowing the migrants to maintain regular contact with those in their Country of origin. Many will never assimilate into English speaking western society given these changes.
