ok so first nitrogen gas turns into ammonia (nitrogen fixation) then ammonia turns into nitrites and then into nitrates (nitrification) then plants absorb the nitrates to build proteins (assimilation) then plants break down waste turning the nitrogen back to ammonia (ammonification) then nitrates turn back into nitrogen gas (denitrification)
